A True Friend

Social psychologist Erich Fromm advised that when forming relationships,
we should focus on “being” rather than “having.”

For example, a possessive mindset—
“You’re my friend, so you should listen to me”—
can leave us feeling anxious when our friends do not meet our expectations.
This kind of attitude makes it difficult to build a healthy relationship.

However, when we sincerely understand
and accept
who we are and who our friend is—
valuing each other simply for who we are—
we can support one another and share joy together.

In the same way, although we are imperfect and incomplete,
we have found true happiness in God, who loves us just as we are.
